#1 Pull Off The Road

The first thing you should do is pull as far off the roadway as possible. If your vehicle breaks down on the highway, try to find an area with extra space on the side of the road. If you are able to, drive slowly and get off the free and find a space on an exit or nearby road to pull over and wait for a tow truck. It is best to wait somewhere safe where cars are not zippy by right by you; it will also make it easier and safe for the tow truck to assist you.

#2 Put On Your Hazards & Make Your Car Visible

Don't assume that other vehicles will see you and provide your vehicle with space. When you are pulled over on the side of the road, especially if you are not parking in a traditional parking space, putting your hazards on will help other drivers see you and provide you with extra space. It will also help the tow truck more easily spot and identify your vehicle as they approach the area where your vehicle is located.

If you have some flairs in your vehicle, or a warning safety triangle, you may want to set up the flairs and warning safety triangles up so that it is easier for vehicles and the tow truck to spot your vehicle.

#3 Keep Things Cool

Depending on the condition of your vehicle, you may not be able to keep your vehicle running and air condition on. If you can't keep your air conditioning running, you'll want to open up all the windows in your vehicle so you can keep the air circulation. When the windows are closed and your air conditioning is off, the temperatures inside of your vehicle can quickly heat up and reach temperatures well above what it is outside.

Just be careful about standing outside of your car if you are parked next to a busy roadway. Don't stand on the side by the road; stay as far back as possible if you have to get out of your car because of the heat.
